Second Possibility - The Psychology Behind Food Waste Pt. I

Why do people waste food?

It is within everybody's capabilities to control the amount of food they order, buy or take on their plates. What stops them from actually taking more and wasting the excess? What do they have to gain from this when they are actually losing out through the process? Losing out on time, money and manpower. Not to mention the farther effects that they have on the world.

What makes people waste food?

This is the main idea behind this option. A behavioural study as to why people waste food.

  • Irrationality comes into play here. People hoard more food against their self interest.
  • Perception of waste in relation to people's experience of scarcity. Those who are in a well-off position have a skewed view of the world. Food does not seem scarce even though it actually is.
  • The thought that our decisions have no impact on the larger picture. People usually view their actions as insignificant in comparison to the country's, thus, they don't think twice about wasting.
  • Anticipated regret. People tend to stockpile food in case they run out of supplies and can't buy them later. They tend to buy more during discounts and sales in case the sale never happens again and they miss it for life.
